Casebook Examples:

1. Building US presence for offshore client

Situation: Offshore contract manufacturer of active pharmaceutical ingredients was critically limiting  its growth by only seeking domestic customers. Management was overextended and lacked experience in establishing relationships with US businesses.

Solution: VCG partner provided representation for client here in the US. Besides undertaking searches for new customers, additional services were developed: long term strategic planning, investigation of new business development opportunities, market development, and searches for corporate partners.

2. Interim management as CFO

Situation: Hi-tech startup was experiencing severe growing pains during early stage, rapid growth phase. Management lacked expertise to develop an appropriate business model and budget for the company.

Solution: VCG partner was hired as interim CFO in which position he developed a rental model for the company's lead product (an automated page turning book scanner), built an economic model, and negotiated an initial manufacturing contract.

 3. Transition from R&D company to commercial enterprise.

Situation: A young, development stage company had developed a portfolio of technologies related to 3-D cameras but were encountering difficulties in attempts to commercialize their intellectual property.

Solution: VCG was retained to assist in developing a viable commercialization strategy. Recommendations relative to organizational structure, capitalization, and a compensation program were formulated.  An economic model was constructed and key assumptions required to drive the business were identified.  VCG will be involved in efforts to source necessary funding for the enterprise as well as in the related negotiations.
